Hi Jeff,

Here are the command outputs, let me know if I have something configured
incorrectly.

guest# stty -all
stty: when specifying an output style, modes may not be set
guest# tty
/dev/tty0
guest# 

One of the side benefits of creating a guest filesystem for UML is that it
is forcing me to learn a lot more of the internals than I did before.

What do stty -all and tty say?

This looks like a terminal setup issue rather than anything specific to UML.
