You'll want to start using Ambari 1.7.0, where you can manage the content
of the -env.sh file as a configuration in Ambari. That way, your changes
are saved and versioned as part of the other Hive configs (and you no
longer have to make changes to the file locally).

Browse to Service > Hive > Configs and look for the section on hive-env.sh.

1.7.0 is just in the release vote but you can grab a build using the links
on this page:
