Oleg, I just wanted to add that I confirmed the importance of that "rule of thumb" the hard way. I created two extra CFs and was able to reliably crash the nodes during writes. I guess for the final setting I'll rely on results of my testing.
But it's also important to not cause the swap death of your machine (i.e. when you go too high on JVM memory).
