Ted, just did a simple HelloWorld.java to test -d32 and it works for me (i.e. the main method will be executed and I am not getting any error like you). I as well can execute java -d32 -version which won't show the 64-Bit Server string portion and thus I assume it successfully switched to 32bit mode.
