Sorry for the red herring. What is your environment? Linux? Windows cmd.exe? Windows + Cygwin?
In Windows + Cygwin, I've noticed that cygwin and gradle can have different ideas of where my home directory is. Is there a cache directory under ~/.gradle? If there is not, then you may try to find the .gradle dir that has the cache folder. Unfortunately I'm just guessing. Sorry to run you down rabbit trails :) Jeremy D.
