I agree 100%. Email is really the preferred way when dealing with a
large number of communities. I don't want to visit 30+ different forums,
each with their own UI etc.
One compromise may be to move to google groups. I follow a great number
of lists there (entirely by email) but they also have a decent (imho, I'm
not using it very much :-) web interface. It seems to work ok.
