Because doing project.profilingEnabled will throw an exception if that property
hasn't been set. All of the example code uses hasProperty.

Correct, depending on how exact you need to be.
You could do:
if (Boolean.valueOf(project.properties.profilingEnabled)){
runAEJvmArguments << "-agentlib:yjpagent"
}
