This is from the HBAse architecture page about region splits:
"When a compaction is triggered in a child, the data from the parent is copied
to the child. When both children have performed a compaction, the parent region
is garbage collected. "

What happens during a region split when major compactions are disabled?

Also, the decision to split a region is based on the combined size of Hfiles in
a store..
I am worried about incremental loads then. Will this lead to Hbase performing
splits before any compaction happens? This can unnecessarily lead to a larger
number of regions. Is it advisable then to turn compactions on during bulk
incremental loads?

Thank you
