jdk 1.5 driver jar for hbase 0.89

I was trying to connect to hbase but I quickly ran into java version issues.
I understand that hbase needs JDK 1.6 but does the client also needs to be
1.6? Is it possible to release JDK 1.5 compatible driver jar file so I can
connect from clients who cannot move to JDK 1.6?
