Well, your .META. table by default keeps ten versions  (See
http://hbase.apache.org/xref/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/HTableDescriptor.html#684
for meta table default schema).  And deletes are just special edits.
And you had lots of regions and .META. is not compressed.  Maybe that
explains it?
