Works for me like this, using the most recent Hive on AWS, using a ~ delimiter:

> create external table mydata (<your schema here>)
row format delimited fields terminated by '~'
stored as textfile
location 's3://mybucket/path/to/data';
> insert overwrite table mydata select * from otherdata;
