not sure what you mean. On one side, web runner was precisely designed so that it could be easily customised and extended. The only thing that you need to provide is your instance of the Registrar, in which you configure which Steps classes you'll be using.

You don't need to download the entire web project at all, but you just need to use the maven-dependency-plugin to download the webapp as an artifact.

The pom in the example is just for guideline purposes. You should be able to easily adapt it to your project requirements, in particular removing the parent if needed.

If you want to attach a sample of the pom you're trying to use, I can have a look.
