I did some load tests and could increase the requests per second
rate from 8 to 18 by merely replacing Xalan with XSLTC. Unfortunately
that caused some exceptions in the authoring area, which are partially
XSLTC bugs (e.g., http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/XALANJ-2154)
and partially not yet tracked down.
we found saxon to be faster than xsltc in production. if it weren't for
the license, saxon would be the default as it beats the crap out of
xalan / xsltc
