Thanks a lot for these clarifications.

Well, I have to install some CMS during the next weeks.  And I don't want to
wait for an indefinite amount of time which might be several months at the
end.  (Yes, I have experience with waiting for Debian releases…)  So if 1.4
cannot be used now or at least withing two weeks or so, it's not for me.  Can
1.4 already be used for production (whereby some small problems wouldn't
matter)?

I don't know, not having tried any recent version of 1.4 myself, but I
wouldn't advise production use before a release candidate has been
announced.  Maybe you'll want to ask that question on the dev mailing
list, though.
