I tried adding -Denv.MAVEN_WORKSPACE=/home/adingfelder/workspace to the ini
file
in the help about, it now lists a property:
env.MAVEN_WORKSPACE=/home/adingfelder/workspace
running the build though still gives a POM error.
I guess I will have to wait for the bug (MNGECLIPSE-581) to get addressed.

I will try the -D flag for eclipse. sounds like it might do the trick.

That said, this works for me on windows and roughly translated to bash:
$>eclipse [commandoptions] -vmargs
-Denv.MAVEN_WORKSPACE=$MAVEN_WORKSPACE
Once eclipse launches click Help->About->Configuration Details *and
verify you have an entry in the list of java properties matching
env.MAVEN_WORKSPACE=/home/dingfeldera/workspace
Also you do need the $ in
<systemPath>${env.MAVEN_WORKSPACE}//java.3rdParty/jars/Serialio-7.5.jar<
/systemPath>
