The project clean forces JDT to re-resolve its internal cache and recompile all generated classes. Also note that there is Maven build phases bound to JDT clean build. See http://docs.codehaus.org/display/M2ECLIPSE/Maven+build+lifecycle#Mavenbuildlifecycle-Full/cleanbuild
