That wasn't a big enough of a hammer; it still has that funky folder but I
realized that it's showing it in the Project Explorer, which is what it
switches to when I switch to the J2EE perspective.
The big sledge hammer that fixed it was deleting the project contents on disk
and then importing it again from SVN as a maven project.
Here's another niggling question; not really important since it's about the
eclipse Project Explorer view, which seems daemon possessed to me, but why does
the Web Resources thing in this screen shot not have an icon?

I'm paranoid about big updates and earlier today reinstalled eclipse for the
new version and reinstalled my plugins and it seems to me that that Web
Resources thing lost its icon after I installed the m2eclipse plugin, but that
could be my imagination.

Delete the project from Eclipse workspace (but do not delete project
content!), then reimport the project. This will re-create proper project
structure including missing .project/.classpath/.settings. At this point
you can add .project/.classpath/.settings to svn:ignore to make sure you
do not check them back to subversion.

I prefer to not have my .settings folder, .classpath, and .project
eclipse files checked in to svn. I noticed that they were and went
into the SVN Repositories tab in eclipse and deleted them there, then
did an svn update and it helpfully deleted them from my project
(that's sarcasm; it was not what I wanted but I'm to blame I guess).
Now I have this perplexing folder in the Project Explorer which
eclipse thinks is something to do with JavaScript, with the name ./
which you can see in the following screen capture:

Any suggestions as to how I can clean this up?
