What is the motivation behind switching?  From the open source perspective, I would rather not provide a duplicate of a service we already have.

If you do have a Geo-IP service that is available via a REST API, then you could most likely use the existing `REST_GET` function instead of creating your own function.  It should be noted that the performance of calling out to a REST service is likely to be less than what you would get from `GEO_GET`, but that may not be a problem for you.
