Try removing other php extensions (php.ini) and running without mod_ssl -
then work you way back... We have a similar problem   on Redhat 7.1 with
PHPMidgard + PHPldap they conflict and cause the server to segfault..

Investigations are underway into building PHP4.0.5 for redhat7.1 to see if
that helps...
