My experience yesterday was that libiconv installed ok downloaded from
freshmeat. I just did....
sudo ./configure
sudo ./make
sudo ./makeinstall

(actually I am not sure I did sudo for the second two but I put it here
just to make sure)
I didn't use any flags. I do have iconv.h installed at
/usr/local/include/iconv.h There are several other variations in the same
folder, iconv.h.in and iconv.h.msvc-shared for example. There is not a
giconv.h though. I may do a re-make to look at the list of parameters etc
that it flashes by....

I am still trying to figure out what OSX substitutes for ld.so ....anyone
have any clues?

I did notice this from the listing below, it seems like there should be
somethere, I just need to poke around:
> checking whether the linker (/usr/bin/ld) supports shared libraries... yes
> checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... unsupported
> checking whether stripping libraries is possible... no
> checking dynamic linker characteristics... darwin1.4 dyld

> checking whether -lc should be explicitly linked in... (cached) yes
