The problem I ran into with the forked packages was that they didn't always install all of the developer lib, especially for the big things like mysql. ( it seems another package was missing something as well) In general package management on OSX has a way to go, for one thing there is not good way to uninstall a package, for another while you can see a list of everything installed that doesn't mean that those things actually went in and went where they were supposed to go. Fink is interesting but it seemed to have some short comings, as I remember it installed everything in a place unique to fink, which made me in turn wonder how well it would work as things were modified down the road.....
