I got about 300-400 users in one database.
But they are only testing users, so only few of them
really uses their data.
If You think about how midgard will hold them , I can not give You any answer.

AFAIK Mysql is more effective when you select form one table and insert
into another one (person, preferences). 

I got about 2000 records in article table sin one database. So I do not think there is
big difference beetwen article and persons  records.
