Yes, I did read that reply. The browser accepts cookies (tried with both Konqueror and Mozilla 1.3. And Eero is right: there is no error output from the auth module.
You are probably aware of this but it's not that clear, that you can look up the password in the db. The database stores the password slightly different. There are two possibilities:
1) It stores only a hash of the password 2) It stores the password verbatim but with ** prepended.
However if you haven't changed the password... the default one is "password" (without quotes).
Yep, the password in the database is "**password" and when I try to log in, I use "password" (without quotes of course).
I'm really not sure what's going on.
