Thanks for your response. I'm getting the impression that you're
misunderstanding me. I'm not complaining about what dpkg does. As a matter
of fact, I have verified that when I put files with certain permissions (or
even ownerships) into dpkg, these are retained in the Debian output package.
Instead I'm talking about how the plugin assembles these files into its
staging directory.

I'll have to take a closer look, but setting permissions will require the plugin to do exec's to chmod which I've tried to avoid because I'd like to do it in all Java for both portability and not least speed.
