It's definitely alive. And looks like it has improved recently,
just compare the support for Linux distributions of the last two releases:

I've also found an interesting blog post from the Mediawiki foundation which
faced the same problem (end of free CDH packages) and now started to use Bigtop:

So, yes Bigtop is also an option:
- minimal changes in the beginning: just switch the package repository URL
  and test (or hope) that everything is running
- hopefully, upgrades are coming (including ARM support)
- otherwise (as always when using open source software), get engaged to
  add the desired features
