FYI, that article is a bit out of date at this point - I believe it was written for Pivot 1.4. It doesn't take advantage of many of the newer features added in 1.5 and 2.0, including Pivot's built-in support for pub/sub messaging - see the subscribe(), unsubscribe(), and sendMessage() methods in ApplicationContext (moved to org.apache.pivot.util.MessageBus in Pivot 2.0).
