Sorry about that. It's release 3.1 final, I updated it prior to posting here.
But I think I got rid of it, though I don't exactly know how. I did several things before adding in all the required strings and getting the desired result. So maybe this will help if anyone ever has the same problem: I deleted the previously, and supposedly overwritten, output files of the .xls stream before generating a new one. I closed Excel for several minutes. I increased the Java heap space (though never getting a heap space error er experiencing a slow behaviour during writing to disk) I shut down everything else in preparations for a restart to really clear the memory for good (had been running for three days). I removed all system.out messages that were generated directly prior to the actual write to disc procedure. So what ever did it, The last file came out nicely.
