I had seen Bugzilla report 48085. My XLS is a bit bigger, typically 4096 bytes. Excel can open it, Excel 2007 for Windows recognizes some issues and after a couple of prompts and warnings it corrects the issue. Open Office and Excel 2003 (and XP) don't even see an issue, just open the workbook and seem to be fine.
The file is actually produced by a VBA script that runs in Excel, taking the data that the user enters, creating a new sheet on a dedicated share with the fields containing the pertinent data. I'll post the VBA and "template" sheet also.
