Hi, You're right : choosing a standard like SAML make your applications work with different products supporting SAML whereas using a proprietary protocol like CAS make your applications able to work "just" with CAS server.
But what do you really need ? SAML is about federation, sharing identities accross organizations whereas CAS is about SSO among your oragnization. There is so far no support for SAML in Shiro project, but CAS server can work with SAML.
