Hi, Not so sure you need an additionnal cache framework here. EhCache is a great framework which knows how to persist data on disk. It has become very very powerfull, especially in its last version : http://ehcache.org/documentation/configuration/fast-restart.
I think it's all about configuration. I took a look at the documentation : http://shiro.apache.org/session-management.html, part "EHCache Session Cache Configuration". I would try the same config with /maxElementsInMemory="1"/.
