It appears my question is not as popular as the CAS stuff that's getting all the responses lately. I guess I'll have to just dig into the source code and figure it out on my own. I wish the Shiro docs had more use cases in it. A reference manual is not always the best way to figure out the framework author's intent for the use of various classes...
