Hey man, Why not use Hive ( https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/LanguageManual+DDL#LanguageManualDDL-CreateTableAsSelect(CTAS)) CTAS to sanitize your data first? You should be able to use CTAS in conjunction with SUBSTR ( https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/LanguageManual+UDF).
