These changes were made before I joined Storm. The related Jiras nor the 
commit history has information about it. Didn't search dev@ on 
https://lists.apache.org/
though, which would be a thing to try.

Since we are mostly in maintainance and there are no open PRs to remove, I 
guess it will stay in the code.
