I didn't notice that (G-Mail sometimes folds prior responses), but it's a good example of where we could trim messages. Footers are another one. The server is going to add the subscribe/unsubscribe information to every message - it's beyond pointless to carry this information through in replies. Individuals' signatures (save for perhaps their name) could also be omitted.

Niall's example was all of 4 lines. It's a snippet. Snippets are very appropriate and welcomed.

I'm not trying to be a code-monger, I'm just trying to reel-in the excessively lengthy posts. By all means, send someone the code if you have it, wish to give it up, and they request it. A prose description of an implementation is generally shorter than a full code posting. Or, are you suggesting that people aren't smart enough to implement your design properly with a prose description of it? Again, folks can ask you to email them the source privately.

I know you think my request is stupid. I see it as being considerate of our fellow subscribers. If consideration for others is stupidity, I am, as I said before, a king's fool ...

There were simple responses that could have been less than 10 lines
but in fact were well over 300 lines. You did not object at all. An
example will follow my signature. I submit that this is where you
might put your efforts, rather than in trying to cut code, if you want
to be effective.
