As others indicated it depends, but if it helps I've just upgraded a web application with 2200+ files, 300k lines from 1.1 to 1.2.7 in two days. I had to find a new way to do some things but these were the exceptions. The bulk of the code needed simple bulk adjustments or no touching at all. IntelliJ IDEA's refactoring and code analysis was priceless in the process.
