Ah, the perils of trying to use bleeding edge software :-). Your best bet is to first gain some basic familiarity with JSF first, using the large number of resources that are available. A good starting point is < http://jsfcentral.com>, which has pointers to many of the available resources. Then, walk through the feature descriptions (which I've been updating recently) on the Shale web site <http://struts.apache.org/shale/>, which talk about each feature and show (at a high level) how it can be used. There's also a brand new page: http://struts.apache.org/shale/using.html that tells you all you need to know about integrating Shale into your own web application. Finally, the "use cases" web application is chock full of examples of the various techniques ... it will be worth your time to examine the source code to the JSP pages and Java classes in this app, plus the configuration resources in the WEB-INF directory.
