Yes, you can try out and experiment with the samples..
 but if I specify a queue name as the destination parameter this does not get 
created by synapse automatically?
  
With ActiveMQ it could.. if you name your destination as 
"dynamicQueues/<destname>" etc (if I remember correctly)..
