Are you running npm as a root user? Also FYI, there's no released version of hive compatible with 0.8.1-alpha. It is aimed clearly at plugging compatibility for the LLAP accelerator. Building 0.7.1 from git is likely to be best bet, if you're planning to use Hive-1.x. Cheers, Gopal
