Reporting invalid references, but not null references

Hello, I was wondering if the issue https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/VELOCITY-553 
 was something that was slated for velocity 1.6.  Or, if there are  
any settings in 1.6 which would force velocity to throw an exception  
if an object does not have a given property?
