relative references in #parse and #include?

Are only explicit references allowed?  Is there a way to search for a 
reference in (or relative to) the directory where the current template 
lives?  I've found that #parse("template_in_same_directory.vm") doesn't 
work.  Does #parse("./template_in_same_directory.vm") work?  Must all 
such references include the full path back to the same directory?
