Agreed with Jacob, wanted to add one more thing: - for child elements of a complex type (I assume that's what you are talking about when saying you need to first initialize the child object), you have available methods like addNewXXX(); I would recommend using those, they are faster than setXXX() and, to me, seem more natural for constructing documents
