You can use the 4-letter command 'mntr', documented on the Admin's Guide: http://zookeeper.apache.org/doc/r3.4.8/zookeeperAdmin.html#sc_zkCommands
On the host running the node, run: echo mntr | nc localhost 2181 #or whatever your configured client port is. And check the zk_server_state entry. It should say 'observer'.
