FWIW, I am running AMQ 5.0 and 5.1-SNAPSHOT on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10.x (2.6.11.4-21.7) and I'm not having this problem that you've described. One invocation of my activemq.sh starts only one instance of a jvm.
