My manager is a web designer/developer (not java). He is worried about all the stuff included in the appfuse pack and I am working in having everything well defined here. The issue you're seeing with logkit and avalon is a well-known issue caused by commons-logging: http://raibledesigns.com/rd/entry/maven_2_hates_commons_logging I tried to switch to SLF4J a couple months ago, but since commons-logging is used by almost every open source project that AppFuse uses, it was very difficult to add exclusions everywhere.
