I'm wondering if somehow the UserManager is in a different Hibernate session from other managers in the class (there are two in the artifact- generated UserAction and I've added a third). Unfortunately, I don't understand the workings of Hibernate anywhere near well enough to work out where to even start investigating that theory :-( I'm trying out a variation of the workaround you mentioned and I'll report back how I get on.
