Also check which version of maven you're using, I had a mysterious problem with the basic commands because I was using an old version od maven. I upgraded versions and it went away. I think my problem was with 2.08 on ubuntu, replacing with 2.10 resolved it. I don't think I was having trouble with same target but usually all these basic targets should just work unless something basic is wrong.
