I just did a clean checkout and build and everything went though fine. This leads to to the suspision that you may be using an unpatched Maven 9. To confirm this can you take a look at the reason for the test failure. In the assembly/target/test-reports/ directory you will see a file named:
TEST-org.apache.avalon.assembly.engine.ApplianceTestCase.txt
This file will detail the cause of the test failure. Could you post back the info it contains?
