So there is a merlinj-api-1.0.jar with the API and a merlinj-1.0.jar with the implemantation (not merlinj-impl-1.0.jar? ) > How will the remote service be implemented? Keep in mind that a component is both a service and a client, the only difference is what interface it actually implements. So, for the service implementor, I hope there will not be anything different than a normal local service. Merlin should be capable of creating the Jini wrapper on the fly. However, for it to work, I need the "availability" contract, which doesn't exist and will add some responsibility to the component implementor.
