To answer your question in general;

There are many "site" directories spread out over the Avalon directories in 
the CVS. These contain a directory named "xdocs" and in there are the source 
files.

The HTML is generated by 

maven xdoc   (I hope I remember correctly)

(for instance running it in avalon/merlin)

and output goes to the "target" directory.

A manual copy is then required, to copy the output to the CVS module 
avalon-site/site, and then commit the HTML in there.
Something on the Apache infrastructure will every now and then check that out, 
into the website directories.
