AFAIK, Merlin never calls System.exit(), but I could be wrong.

Hence, Merlin basically relies on that the 'enclosing container', typically 
the "command-line" issues a shutdown when necessary.
Hence, Stephen's suggestion that you create the embedding container, and 
decide how the shutdown mechanism should be propogated from the point of 
decision to the top-level container, i.e. your own Main class.
